Abstract
Palmi-Whan has been known to be effective in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, neurasthenia, choronic nephrosis, nephrogenous hypertension, renal failure, difficulty of urination, renal edema etc., in oriental medicine. The studies were attempted to evaluate the anti-diabetic activities by concurrent administrations of palmi-whan extract and glibenclamide.
The results were as follows:
1. The serum glucose level of streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats was significantly de creased by concurrent administrations of palmi-whan extract and glibenclamide, as compared with that of the streptozotocin control group. In the serum glucose level, the concurrent administrations of palimi-whan extract with glibenclamide (200+0.5, 400+0.5 and 800+0.5mg/kg, repectively)showed more dffective than the individual administrations, i.e., palmi-whan extract (200 and 400mg/kg, respectively) and glibenclamide (0.5 and 1.0mg/kg, repectively)
2. The serum cholesterol level in stresptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats was significantly de-creased by concurrent administrations of palmi-whan extract and glibenclamide, as compared with that of the streptozotocin control group. In the serum cholesterol level, the concurrent administrations of palmi-whan extract with glibenclamide(200+0.5, 400+0.5 and 800+0.5mg/kg, respectively) showed more effective than the individual administrations, i.e., palmi-whan extract (200 and 400mg/kg, respectively) and glibenclamide(0.5 and 1.0mg/kg, respectively)
3. The serum triglyceride level of streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats was significantly de-creased by concurrent administrations of palmi-whan extract with glibenclamide, as compared with that of the streptozotocin control group. In the serum triglyceride level, the concurrent administrations of palmi-whan extract with glibenclamide were more effective than the individual administrations of glibenclamide, but which is nearly individual administrations of palmi-whan. These findings indicate that the concurrent administrations of palmi-whan extract with glibenclamide showed better improvements that the individual administrations of them in serum total cholesterol level and serum triglyceride level.
